Hiking at Lake Garda means coastal paths with lake views, trails above olive groves and high routes on Monte Baldo. Most routes are in the north, between Riva, Torbole and Malcesine, where the mountains rise straight from the shore. The routes below are examples; check current trail conditions and closures locally with the tourist offices.
Our top pick: Cima Capi via ferrata at Lake Garda
Popular routes
- Ponale trail (Riva del Garda): a former road high above the lake, with views back to Riva. It is only moderately steep but also used by cyclists. Allow roughly two to three hours depending on your goal.
- Busatte-Tempesta (Torbole): a panoramic path on the hillside, partly with steps and viewpoints, suitable for families. It takes about one and a half to two hours.
- Monte Baldo: the cable car takes you to 1,760 metres, where high paths with wide views start, without the climb.
- Rocca di Garda: a short climb above the town of Garda to a rock with a view of the south shore.
- Lakeside paths: the promenades of Malcesine, Limone, Bardolino and Lazise for flat walks.
Best time and gear
Spring and autumn have ideal temperatures, as the weather at Lake Garda shows. In July and August start early, carry plenty of water and allow for afternoon thunderstorms. On Monte Baldo it is often ten to fifteen degrees cooler than at the lake.
Getting back without a car: local buses and boats run from Torbole, Riva and Malcesine. One direction can often be done by boat, see the ferry guide.
