Riva del Garda sits at the northern tip of Lake Garda, already in Trentino. Here the lake is narrow and framed by steep mountains, a strong contrast to the flat, wide south. If you want to combine cycling, hiking or sailing with beach days, Riva is the right choice.

Where to stay in Riva

Location Best for Good to know
Old town and harbour Couples, short breaks Everything on foot, lively in the evening, rooms often smaller
On the shore towards Torbole Families, beach holiday Sunbathing lawns and beaches at the door, quieter
Hillside above Peace, views Lovely lake view, but steep without a bike or car

Allow for the wind: a steady wind blows on the north shore almost every day. That is why windsurfers and sailors come, while swimmers look for sheltered bays.

Things to do in Riva

  • Old town and harbour: narrow lanes behind the lakeside promenade, with the moated castle (Rocca) right at the harbour.
  • Cycling: shoreline paths to Torbole and Arco, mountain bike routes into the hills.
  • Boat trips: scheduled boats leave Riva for the south, ideal for a day trip to Limone or Malcesine. Fares are in the overview of boat trips.
  • Day trips: the Dolomites or Verona can be booked as guided day tours.

Who Riva does not suit

If you want warm, shallow water for small children, or to reach Gardaland without a car, you are better off in the south, for example in Lazise or Bardolino.

Frequently asked questions

Is Riva del Garda good for swimming?

Yes, there are pebble beaches and sunbathing lawns on the shore. The water in the deep north stays cooler than in the shallow south around Sirmione.

How far is Riva from Verona airport?

About 80 to 85 kilometres, a little over an hour by car.

Do I need a car in Riva?

Not for the town itself: the old town, harbour and shore are within walking distance, and Torbole is reachable by bike. For trips to the south there are boats and buses.
